Now the year is not quite over yet, but as in the case of Hypnotist in ’91, we again dare to predict that Cosmic is guaranteed to be at the top of our readers’ pool. What’s more, he will become the first German superstar of house music. The boy is simply unstoppable. Anyone who has witnessed one of his fantastic performances (at least five in Frankfurt) will understand the voices that speak of the best live act in the world, just like the official hardcore board artist Tanith. He recently played his first live gigs in the USA, which will now be followed by an extensive European tour, which will of course bring him back to Frankfurt. The reason for this is his new LP “Stellar Supreme”. Very cosmic…

(….)

Groove: Since classical music, techno is actually the first music we export again, apart from the Scorpions, Modern Talking, etc. …

CB: There are also clear reasons for this. We have the advantage here that there are many record companies who look for personalities and then grant them complete artistic freedom. That means we can develop independently of everything, don’t have to pay attention to trends or styles and can really do what we want and think is right. Of course, that’s very different from being forced into trend patterns, as is often the case in England or America, and having to follow a whole range of rules if you want to make a record that should also be released. Fortunately, that’s not the case here. That’s why we’ve developed such diversity, and that’s why we’re at the forefront now.

Groove: Besides, I think our roots lie more in electronic music in terms of musical tradition anyway. The first independent music from Germany was Schulze, Tangerine Dream & Co. For me, it was somehow based on classical music…

CB: That’s exactly why I came to house as a classical musician. There’s no contradiction there at all. As an electronic musician, I can’t imagine any other development.

(…)

Groove: It’s not something that was set up from above, but was developed from the grassroots, which also created the infrastructure that made the aforementioned freedoms possible in the first place.

CB: It’s still the case that the grassroots or the people who started it continue to determine how the music progresses. Just over a quarter of a year ago, it looked as if things would slide downwards. That’s over now. We’ve really made it. It’s going even better than before. Really fantastic!

Groove: That’s right. In the spring, quite a few people had a pretty bad feeling and everyone was wondering how much longer it would last. Thankfully, the industry then backed off and the whole thing was insulted and declared dead. The latest news in terms of idiocy: a major company has just released a sampler with the unbeatable title “This was Technohouse”. Well, how does that make you feel as a diehard?

CB: Wave, wave from the rear-view mirror! Why the big companies have never got to grips with the matter is probably also to do with money. Both the DJs and the musicians can earn money with their music and make a living from it. I could have gotten an advance of DM 250,000, but I didn’t want to. I can also finance myself by performing. It’s no longer like in the days of the New German Wave, when you had to ask yourself: “Do I go to the industry or do I go shoveling coal? That’s definitely a point that makes everything much happier for us. You mustn’t forget that.

Groove: Let’s move on to your LP. Despite all the advance praise and hymns of praise, we should perhaps also respond to a few critical voices that warn of a certain undesirable development. Let me put it this way: If you draw parallels with rock music, the “good/honest/progressive” Woodstock freaks (Hendrix, Greatful Dead, etc.) were followed a few years later by a development in the direction of inflated kitsch operettas (Barclay James Harvest, Supertramp, etc.). As a counter-regulation, punk then hit us in the face again, which brings us to Rotterdam in today’s context. (…)I understand those who say, “if he carries on like this, we’ll have a new Vollenweider one day” because of the sometimes cloying elements. Now you’re still at a point where you can control things yourself. So it’s up to you.

CB: What I don’t like is that progressiveness is always equated with noise and roughness. So if someone makes a classical piano piece, it’s no longer “progressive”. When I make an album, I try to portray the state I’m in as complexly as possible. If I’m doing very well and I go into the studio from this happy state, then I’m happy to accept that it might be too cloying for some people. In the same way, it’s possible that the next record will be so rough that people say: “Gee, where’s that Cosmic Baby?”.

(…)

Groove: What other projects will you be working on in the future? You already mentioned Moby…

CB: Futurhythm with Jonzon will definitely continue, something new is coming in December. Then Energy52 with Kid Paul, we’re working on that at the moment. It’s going to be great, I can already tell! Also Visions of Shiva with Paul van Dyk.

Cosmic Baby-House meets Classic When his star began to shine tenderly at the beginning of the year, we introduced the cosmic baby to our readers for the first time.
