This daring thing between rhythm-oriented hardcore and ambient music is gradually beginning to conquer the club scene, although it doesn’t stop at living rooms either. What is certain is that one of the leading tranceheads comes from Germany, both musically and in terms of trance philosophy.

FP: How do you define “trance”?

Cosmic: “Trance” is the feeling of floating, of suddenly experiencing “normal” things “anew” due to a special event, i.e. from a different, higher level. An example: You are having breakfast in your “all morning” café. That’s okay, but nothing special. One day you meet the woman of your life there. From that day on, you will see your “normal” café in a completely different light: It just no longer has the pure “function” of going to eat after getting up, but will from now on be THE place where you fell in love, above all else. Your breakfast café is still the same and yet completely different from before.

FP: Is trance a further development of techno?

Cosmic: “Further development” is not the right word. It’s more like two complementary elements from the same family. It’s clear: the more techno spread, the stronger the desire for the equivalent counterpart became. Techno and trance complement each other perfectly: each system thrives on tensions, contradictions and opposites. They are what make the whole thing (in our case, house music) interesting, diverse and really good!

FP: So you think that’s exactly why so many people are into trance now?

Cosmic: Ditto!

FP: How do your trance tracks differ from the ambient house of KLF and The Orb?

Cosmic: Give the same photo to ten people and let them tell you what they see. Ideally, you will also get ten different photos: Cosmic Baby simply has to be different from The Orb. We are different people working on the same idea (the same photo).

More definitive: Cosmic Baby will always be more rhythmic, more expressive and therefore more physical than The Orb, for example, despite all the chill-out. I don’t see trance as pure mind music. Trance is mind and body and therefore less conceivable in terms of content through “sea noise” blueprints plus shaman flutes. I am more oriented towards the African reality of drum rhythms, which change the mind with mercilessly stimulating rhythms via the body. But for me it’s the basslines and the rhythm machines. (…)

FP: Opponents of trance music describe the tracks as monotonous and boring. What do you think of this argument?

Cosmic: I am convinced that any open mind can distinguish between “boring” and “exciting” trance music. Of course, all those who produce “trance” at the lowest level (cheap new age drivel) for purely market reasons will help support this superficial argument. In my case, this is probably not appropriate.

FP:You have a classical music education. Do you think that’s a big advantage?

Cosmic: (…) I would probably be giving classical piano concerts today if I hadn’t heard Kraftwerk for the first time when I was about 14. Do I have any “advantages” because of my training? There are so many brilliant musicians who can’t even read music. So what the hell!

FP: Do you see parallels in classical music?

Cosmic: Classical music died around 1955 as an “authentic sound”. Handel and Mozart were “party musicians” in their day. People enjoyed them because their music was both functional and ingenious in terms of content. In 1992, instead of the Wiener Hof, there is the “Tresor” or the “Omen”. That is my claim.

FP: The term trance can already be found in mythology. Are there any connections for you?

Cosmic: Of course: I’m interested in the border areas of human existence. It’s not so much the verifiable, the measurable that turns me on. I live, have experiences, act and am curious to see how things develop. In mythology and Far Eastern cultures, e.g. Taoism, many insights were gained about trance states: The whole was considered intuitively and not broken up and analyzed individually for itself. It is only in recent years that we have come to realize that in a universal order, everything is connected to everything else, is configured together and feeds back into each other. Unnatural interventions in a system do not result in real knowledge, but are rather destructive and arbitrary. Music also functions in large emotional blocks and not in serial individual events. This is especially true for trance music.

FP: So what’s the best thing that can happen to someone when they listen to your music?

Cosmic: My music is an inventory of the world as I experience it, process it and finally release it to the outside world. It’s wonderful when someone can use it to make their own world more beautiful.

FP: You are particularly strong live on stage – what does your live concept look like?

Cosmic: The main thing is to have fun playing. Every night I perform is different: there’s the different location, a different audience from club to club and city to city and my mood. These variables result in what makes me live. I don’t want a stereotypical tour where a DAT runs from start to finish. This is where, for once, my classical training really comes in handy: I can directly translate what I feel. Unfortunately, I can’t do without DAT tracks completely yet: I play with very reduced backings that leave me a lot of room for improvisation. The much-cited MIDI-J is what I want to be as soon as possible: to be able to handle my own musical material as freely as a DJ with his records.

FP: But isn’t it fundamentally stupid to play music that is created in the studio live on stage?

Cosmic: No, if that were the case, I wouldn’t do it! I don`t imitate my studio material, I develop unique versions of the tracks together with the crowd. I don’t see an event like this as a reactionary rock’n’roll relic, but as another possible element of techno house culture. Dear Westbam, for me only the content can be reactionary, not the form. Some DJs remind me much more of RnR attitudes than a live performance ever can!

FP: Are trance tunes sexually stimulating?

Cosmic: Every class track has a sexually stimulating effect! This is one of the most magical things in music: a super drumbeat gets you moving, a hot bass literally touches your genitals, a brilliant melody even integrates your head. And when all this happens together with a fantastic woman, everything is clear…

FP: What do you think of pioneers like Klaus Schulze, Tangerine Dream and Jean Michel Jarre…

Cosmic: I think a lot of Tangerine Dream and Brian Eno. If I were a DJ, I would definitely incorporate pieces by them into every night. That’s meant as a great compliment: to find 15-year-old pieces absolutely timeless.

(…)

Between hardcore, house and philosophy: Cosmic Baby The word trance has been bandied about in the media, sometimes as the “next big thing”, as the successor to […]

[195

post-9775","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-press-archive
["GET
